How do ya spell that??

January30

As an English teacher I found there were many spelling errors and incorrect use of words and grammar in student’s writing. These appeared to be influenced by the saturation of text that we find ourselves surrounded by today. Texting language also seemed to be creeping into all writing genres. I was confronted by these two images at the weekend. Whilst clever and catchy could this adaption of language be adversely impacting the spelling of our children?

I think this would be a great “hook” for teaching persuasive language to students.

What’s that tone?

What’s that tone?

As part of a unit on speaking and listening I have been having great fun using telligami to explore tone. Students have been creating their gamis to demonstrate their ability to use different tones as well as to identify the tone used by others. We have been publishing the gami links on our Edmodo page.

The Art of Persuasion

An interesting approach explaining persuasive language. It helps show how we are influenced. The examples provided help make the terms really clear. Probably best used with senior end of the school.

Persuasive Language in Advertisements

These are great examples of advertisements to use with junior secondary students. They are particularly useful for identifying persuasive techniques and audience. Plenty of humour too.
